Yelle Signs with Carolina

Former Bruin fourth line center Stephane Yelle has signed a one year contract worth $550,000 with the Carolina Hurricane.  The Bruins informed Yelle at the conclusion of the playoffs that they did not intend to bring him back for the 2009-2010 season.  With the addition of Steve Begin and the resigning of Byron Bitz to a one-way deal, there was no room for Yelle on the fourth line.  Last season Yelle recorded 7 goals and 11 assists while averaging 13:15 TOI per game.  However, in the last 26 games of the regular season he only recorded one assist and was a -7.    Yelle won 52% of the faceoffs he took last season and provided solid penalty killing skills with excellent shot blocking abilities. The Bruins hope Begin can fill the void left by Yelle, especially in the faceoff department.

Hey, must all my comments be approved? Fack.

Anyways, I know its early but how much do you think Lucic will command after next year? $4 mil?

Mook, all comments go through without approval. From there the comments get emailed directly to me and I can allow the comment to stand or delete it.

As for Lucic, since he will have arbitration rights, I expect him to get a salary of atleast $3 million. If the Bruins do not lock him up prior to his RFA status, I wouldn’t be surprised to see teams attempt to sign him to an offer sheet. The Bruins will have plenty of money available to sign Lucic with the salaries of Savard, Chara, Recchi, Morris, and Ference coming off the books after this season. I would assume Chara is brought back at a relative similar salary, but the rest may be allowed to walk. The Bruins also finally rid themselves of Glen Murray’s buyout after this season as well, which opens up another $1.383 million.

My bet is that Lucic is resigned prior to him reaching his RFA status (e.g. David Krejci) at probably a similar salary. Lucic is the face of the franchise so I doubt they’ll play hardball with him.

I agree…they must sign Lucic ! They also have to find a way to get Savard back. Get creative with the contracts ! Savy has said he would love to remain a Bruin, another strong season by the team may convince him to stay. I also wish Yelle well. He was a warrior with the B’s and was a great guy. Had the opportunity to meet him while visiting Boston !

Didn’t Chara sign for 5 years?

  5. Habhater says:

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reports that Burke has his eye on the Bruins in an attempt to land a goal scoring winger. Kessel comes to mind of course but in order for that to work the leafs would have to offer up picks as the B’s have very little cap space at the moment. I wouldn’t be surprised if the B’s ship out Kobasew for a pick thus freeing up an additional 2.33M for Kessel.

I would think it a mistake if they let Savard walk as well. They need the points that he brings and he is getting better on defense.

  7. pekese says:

Yeah, it was a five year deal for a total of $37.5 million on July 1st, 2006. I have to apologize I thought Chara would be an unrestricted free agent following this season, but in fact it isn’t until after the 2010-2011 season. Thanks for picking up on that Jefe.

  8. mattg says:

They should get Chara to renegotiate a new contract, give him some long term security and get that cap hit down.

  9. Mook says:

Burke is a moron. Of all the teams to “target” he finds one in his own division.

Whatever, leaf/bruins trades have been pretty good! (raycrap/rask)

This means more to people who live in Boston:

BOSTON — NCAA hockey champion Boston University will face Boston College in the men’s game of a Hockey East doubleheader at Fenway Park on Jan. 8, one week after the NHL’s annual Winter Classic at the ballpark.

In the opener, the women’s teams of Northeastern and New Hampshire will play. Hockey East announced the games on Thursday.

Fenway Park, the home of baseball’s Red Sox, will be set up for the New Year’s Day game between the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers.

In the previous two Winter Classics, Pittsburgh played Buffalo at Ralph Wilson Stadium in 2008 and Detroit played Chicago at Wrigley Field this year.

Boston University leads Boston College, the 2008 NCAA champion, 123-106-17 in the storied series.

Is anyone else worried about Montreal next season? I’m looking at the new guys they are bringing in Gomez, Gionta, Cammalleri are going to help them up front a great deal. Mara I dont think is going to be a big deal but I think Hal Gill can be a game changer. I wasn’t a huge fan of him on Boston mostly because I wished he would be more physical but he does bring a great deal of defense to any team. I remember watching him shut down Jagr and some of the top forwards that came into Boston. His wingspan helps him sweep the puck, but his one one one skills are going to frustrate Boston forwards.

I look at what Boston has done and I’m not seeing the same kind of results. Granted Montreal had a lot of work to do but I think they have put together a big team this off season.

  12. Jefe77 says:

Pekese, no worries, you’re usually quite accurate, so we can let this one go! Anyways, I say offer Savvy and Z extensions. That should be priority; it would be a mistake to let Savard go a this point.

I say, sign him to a deal asking him to take a paycut, to win in Boston. We have the deepest center lineup in the NHL. Keep that trio (Bergie, Krejci and Savvy) around for another 3 years, and let Krejci grow into the role of first line center.

  13. Jefe77 says:

Nick, I dont really know what you are talking about. Hal Gill’s one-on-one skills? Do you seriously see Hal Gill is a game changer? Sure he could make plays against Jagr, who is not much smaller or faster, in the corners. Gill had nothing on Jagr in open ice.

Montreals forwards are going to get crushed next season. Toronto will be a better team, you heard it here first.

Back to Gill; who does that giant pussy remind me of??

    Lets see,

    Lambert the Lion
    The Jolly Green Giant
The abominable snow man (Looney tunes)
    Clifford the dog
    The Rain Man
    A whale shark
    A balooga
Frankenstein (when he is picking flowers)

    I could go on…
