We all know that the Toronto Maple Leafs are very interested in Boston Bruins young sniper Phil Kessel, but what do they have to offer?
Everyone seems to be saying that Kessel to Toronto should happen soon and that the Leafs are far and away the front runners. I tend to see this more as another “it’s Brian Burke” type thing.
The Bruins aren’t going to deal Kessel to a division rival for 2 1sts and second. Not to be blunt, but the Leafs have no roster play the Bruins want aside from Luke Schenn, who according to Leafs fans is the next Ray Bourque.
Everyone is saying that talks with teams like Nashville, New York and Los Angeles are just to up the offer from Burke. Sure, but I’m pretty sure Nashville and Los Angeles have better pieces than Toronto to land Kessel.
The Bruins also have the option of matching a Toronto offer sheet, and then trading off Kobasew, Ference or Bergeron and then Burke doesn’t get his guy.
The Bruins are in no real need to trade Kessel right now, and if an offer sheet comes, the Bruins are going to match it.
Unless the Bruins are blown away, Kessel will remain with the team under contract or not. All this talk of Kessel to the Leafs is premature, and if he does go to the Leafs, it will be a lot more than 2 1sts and a 2nd.
