What Happened to the Days of QO’s?

What really pisses me off over this entire Phil Kessel saga is that he really has no leverage other than to sign an offersheet or holdout, yet he expects to get this mega deal.

Players who are not yet arbitration eligible used to sign their qualifiers and be done with it, but since the new NHL, and the idea of signing players young so their cap hit will be a bargain down the road, these young kids get huge deals after their rookie deal is up.

The only reason teams sign these players to these deals is to buyout arbitration years and UFA years.  Kessel wants 4+ million per, but he isn’t willing to sign long term.
