Lucic Signs Three Year Extension

Good news for Bruins fans, Milan Lucic signed a three year extension today.

BOSTON, MA – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has signed forwardMilan Lucic to a three-year contract extension through the 2012-13 NHL season. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal will not be disclosed.

The 21-year-old Lucic set career highs in all major statistical categories last year after recording 17 goals and 25 assists for 42 points, in addition to tallying 136 penalty minutes and a +17 rating. He netted his first career hat trick and a career-best four points on October 25, 2008, after a 3-1=4 performance against the Atlanta Thrashers.

During the 2008-09 postseason, the 6’3’’ 228-pound winger had three goals and six assists and a team best +12 plus/minus rating in 10 games.

In his rookie year in 2007-08, Lucic registered 8-19=27 totals and 89 penalty minutes in 77 contests. Lucic earned the team’s “Seventh Player Award” for his efforts, an award voted on by the fans and given to the Bruin who performs above and beyond expectations. He also contributed two goals in seven postseason games.

Lucic has skated in both games during the 2009-10 season and has notched one assist and five penalty minutes.

He was invited to – and participated in – Canada’s National Men’s Team Orientation Camp this past August, in advance of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and 2010 IIHF World Championship. The 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be played in Lucic’s hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia.

Originally drafted by the Bruins in the second round (50th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Lucic helped the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League capture the 2007 Memorial Cup Championship.

Update: According to Jay Gold, it is a three year deal worth approximately 4 million per season.

UPDATE II: Matt Kalman of ESPNBoston.com says the deal is a 3 year deal worth $12.25 million. That breaks down to a $4,083,333 cap hit per season.

    savard and wheeler now, please.

good thing that morris signing was for one year. chia has a plan…so strange to see a GM who knows what they’re doing. given that i live in toronto and constantly hear about the stupidness that the leafs are doing this is refreshing. the b’s being my fave makes it sweet too!

Great signing by PC. Lucic just had to be signed. It’s good that the negotiations did not drag on all year. But how will Lucic’s cap hit play into next year? Isn’t Savard’s contract up this year as well? I would hate to lose him to the Leafs.

Dont get me wrong I love Lucic but that is 1 million a year over paid atleast what a joke why do we keep over paying players on this team HE IS NOT CAM NEELY similar but still not Neely come on PC

  5. psands says:

there is not another player in the league like lucic, on points alone, he is not worth 4 million a year, but what he brings to the game every night is.

when every team plays the Bruins, they know they have to play lucic, he is a scary player out there.

he is well worth the 4 million, he is a team guy, and it is not often a guy like this comes around, let alone plays for your team. i am so happy we got this out of the way.

lucic is the ideal “Bruin” good move by pc.

psands i agree 100 percent. he brings so much to the table game in and game out. now we have to get the other deals done.

  7. Bruins says:

psands took the words right out of my mouth. there is no one else in the league that gives you what lucic does. i wasnt expecting that much, but he is definitely worth it

I don’t know how many of my friends have brought Lucic up in conversation, everybody loves his style of play and everybody wishes he was playing for THEIR team. This is a wonderful signing. I want to see those same signings as well, Savard and Wheeler. With Morris coming off the books and Glen Murray’s buyout penalty coming off the books as well, we will be lined up for some room to sign these guys. I’d like to see Savard take a contract similar to the one he has now, maybe increase it by .75/yr for 4 years…
