This Team is What it is

I’ve wanted to rationalize that this team isn’t as bad as it is, and that the magic of 08-09 will reappear, but it just isn’t happening.  That team overachieved, plain and simple.  Is this team as bad as it seems?  No.  I think this team is somewhere in between 08-09 and 09-10.

Obviously, injuries have played a huge role.  Marc Savard and Milan Lucic have both missed substantial amounts of time.  Mark Stuart and Andrew Ference have missed time.  But that’s no excuse.  This team has had chances to win so many games, but they just can’t score.  I’ve always said, “if this team could just score, they’d be so good.”  08-09 showed us that.  How many 2-1, 3-2 games have we lost this year?  If we won half of those losses, we’d be a top 3 team in the East.  You don’t win hockey games by defense, at the end of the day, it’s who can score the most.

This team HAS THE WORST OFFENSE IN THE LEAGUE with Carolina and Edmonton!

I’m somewhat disappointed with all these injuries that we have not made a small move to acquire someone who can help us.  Guys like Trent Whitfield and Drew Larman aren’t going to make a difference.

This team needs a shakeup, soon.

Well said ! However, who wants our shit ?? Wideman and Ryder to name a few…making good $$.

I think we are screwed and have to wait to draft / develop some guys. That’s what happens when you sign guys after an over achieving year !

  2. mook says:

you can’t make that assessment given all the injuries we’ve had. sounds like an excuse, but it’s true.

    take it easy

  3. Pearson says:

Im no expert but i feel as if something is gonna happen in the next couple days. Even if pc is leaning towards next years hopes this is a quickly sinking ship that is dissapointing lots of people everytime they play. They arent what they were last year and health or not i dont see this team doing much without a boost from someone else.

Id look for pc to clear some space the next couple days, call up some talent and use the time as a showcase before the olympic break

  5. Richardo says:

How about Wideman almost taking Wheeler out in the second period….

  6. Dano says:

I agree to some extent but this is not the same team as last year by any means—gone are character guys who kept the clubhouse loose and in control (PJ and Wardo)gone is the offense with Kessel and the myriad of injuries that seem to be coinciding with someone returning from the IR, and gone is the accountability–Julien started it the other day, but in all honesty…a little late on calling out Wideman. Ryder, Wheeler and to some extent Recchi.
Lets also take into account that this team was built with a defense first mentality—everyone playing defense first also plays offense second. Something needs to change and soon because this is not a playoff team.

  7. Mark Mowers says:

Dave Lewis has returned to the bruins bench this season

  8. GoB'sGo says:

I wish Bruins fans would stop suggesting that the team should trade Ryder…he was by far the most effective and noticeable player on the ice last night (for either team)…he’s also right at the top of our goal scorers, so let that go. Secondly, why does everyone want Wheeler gone on these boards…a young player, playing great hockey, twice as physical as last year, and only going to get stronger and more confidence. Finally speaking of confidence, fans, especially at the games booing Wideman (not saying his play has been up to his standard) this isn’t helping his confidence…which is very important to a player…take away his confidence, and things will continue to get worse. How about supporting your team instead of berrating every player and whining/complaining away.

I for one thought the team controlled the play last night and showed (through most of the game) how strong a puck control team this group has the potential to be. Go Bruins!

  9. Birdman2403 says:

I can’t stand the ….we”ve had lots of injuries be patient. There is 30 games left….how patient are we going to be ? Guys get hurt, guys step up. Oh wait, no one has stepped up.

Make a deal. Julien bench some guys. You looked like a genius turning this team around last year. Now all you do is roll out the ol’ crew to go through the motions night after night. There is no sense of desperation or guys fighting for jobs. Wideman can play brutal for 2 months and still keeps playing…and playing a lot and P.P. ??????????

    • jimmy50 says:

      Bench who?

      • Birdman2403 says:

Well….for starters Wideman. Not only is he stuggling but DIRECTLY involved in opponents goals. How about Ryder, man he sure is lighting the lamp ??

These guys have no consequences, they know they get their next shift if they suck or not. So why give an effort to improve. It’s called a wake up call !

  10. willisss says:

last year was no fluke..we had ONE person on the team who was a huge part of our goal scoring, who we let go. he was on the ice during our winning streaks, and our scoring, and i realize we didnt have the cap to sign him, but when it comes to true raw talent, you got to make space..thats why we should never have let shane hnidy walk

  11. mook says:

i’d bench all of you bandwagoners. bruins lose a few games and you want to trade the team.

    this isn’t fun anymore…

    • Jefe77 says:

Mook, that is exactly why I dont post as much here anymore. Constant rants about pulling triggers on things, with not very much consideration for the reality that is the business of hockey.

Have you ever seen a more impatient group of fans? Not to bring up the whole fair weather fan thing, but as Williss pointed out many of Boston fans are fair weather.

Maybe they did overachieve last year, but the hockey they played did not happen by accident.

Quick fixes DONT work for teams who are building for success, and all those contracts PC signed this offseason and this season were great deals, setup to keep a foundation together.

THANK GOD PC is the real GM, not all these fantasy freakers.

Keep the GODDAMN FAITH, and GO BRUINS.

  12. TOPICKS4LIFE says:

mook, your not getting the big picture man. the team looks worst than they did at the beginning of the season. and with all the injuries, and inconsistancy, it doesnt look like this team can be turned around without P.C taking action. I do agree though, that we need to focus on keeping our development going because these season is turing into a bust. keep those high picks P.C…

  13. backbruin says:

We outplayed Columbus last night in a big way, and if we scored on even half the open net’s we win 7-3. Iknow one guy that won’t miss those open net’s..;).sports net hockey central once again mentioned kovy and Boston in the same sentence and said how it’s an absoulte perfect fit..And mentioned that deal would make us an instant Cup contender if not a fav!!

  14. psands says:

kovalchuk would not make us a favorite, we sould have to deal wheeler stuart and a pick probably just to get him. so you are adding a big piece, but also subtracting pretty important pieces. we might get better, but it is not worth it, we still would not be favorites.

as far as booing wideman goes, the Bruins play in Boston, this is a city where fans expect a lot of the teams and players. the bruins were supposed to contend for a cup this year, but instead have been a average team.

wideman was great all around last year, and this year he looks like shit, so he is going to get booed. big deal, it should be a wake up call. they are booing him because they know he is much better than what he has been showing.

the Bruins wanted to be up there with the Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics for the sports scene in Boston, now they are, and this is what you get when you play like shit in Boston. this is not Columbus or Florida, so spare me the soft “dont boo it hurts their feelings” bull shit.

i don’t want to give up on this team yet, ryder did look pretty good last night and the refs really blew that Lucic call. but pc has to be smart, he has a lot of assets, and if he made some moves now we could be a real contender next year.

  15. backbruin says:

Yes Kovalchuck would make us a favourite, and giving wheeler stuart and a pick would be perfect in my mind. Look I’m not sure you understand what kind of impact a Kovalchuk gives a team and what other teams have to do to try and stop him. Right now he plays on a one line team, if he cam here we would have 3 solid scoring lines and our weak ass PP would become lethal..How any of you can sit and say that Kovalchuk wouldn’t be worth fkn wheeler and stuart and a pick is absolutely ludicrous.

Are you that embedded in mediocrity with this team that you have become delusional with some of our players and what they are worth. I’ll tell you right now we have one shot at getting a top “2” pure goal scorer and this will be the chance..the stars have aligned, all the ducks are in a row with our picks and young talent that we need to act RIGHT THE FK NOW.

Don’t give me this wheeler and stuart shit anymore, because it makes me angry!!

wake the fk up and realize that this has to happen or we will be talking about how are team is underachieving in another 10 years!!

    • psands says:

yea we would be a real deep team, oh wait there is the thing called the salary cap. it is pretty convenient you forgot about that.

so we would still have to move even more money, probably ryder. so you are losing another “goal scorer” as well if kovalchuk would come. you are mentally challenged if you think we would be a deep team if we got kovalchuk.

keep on dreaming though, i would love to have him too, but you are so dumb if you think he will answer all of our questions.

the guy has a better supporting cast in atlanta. i would much rather try to move underachievers like sturm and ryder, and sign kovalchuk in the off season without giving anything up.

this would be a one line team just like the thrashers have, and that seems to be working out real well for them……

put away your boner and think about the whole situation. i would rather move picks and prospects before i move stuart and wheeler.

  16. pearson says:

…but do you do the deal if he wont resign?

kovalchuck is nasty, and i think he still hasnt reached his full potential with the team he has around him… but to give away lots for a rental?? i dunno man

    • jmoney says:

he will resign!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it would be a trade and sign. We have money coming off the books and we just have to dump ryder or wideman in the deal. The cap hit is the average not the yearly hit. Jesus Christ. Why is this so hard to understand. He will make 100 mill over 10 and it will be front loaded contract like savards so the cap hit will be around 6 million not 10 or 11 or whatever he wants. Picks hardly ever turn into a kov or crosby. This is another one of boston’s chances to prove they want to seriously contend like they had so many times in the past to prove. We are pushing 40 years without a cup. Come on guys wake up and save the “believe speech.” It is now or never. Patience has been here for way too long. Wideman sucks and was overpaid for one year of good hockey.

  17. pearson says:

…but do you do the deal if he wont resign?

kovalchuck is nasty, and i think he still hasnt reached his full potential with the team he has around him… but to give away lots for a rental?? i dunno man.

however, keep in mind wheeler is only signed through this year, boychuck or mcquaid can (somewhat) replace stuey and toronto’s #1 isnt going to give us instant results in 2011.

if he wants to resign, how can you say no?

  18. Jefe77 says:

Mook, that is exactly why I dont post as much here anymore. Constant rants about pulling triggers on things, with not very much consideration for the reality that is the business of hockey.

Maybe they did overachieve last year, but the hockey they played did not happen by accident. They are the best team in the division, they just have not played like it yet this season. Due to injuries, lack of chemistry and grit, maybe they wont ever come into form this season, but its NOT a reason to lose confidence in the GM or coach. Or to blow up a good young roster.

Quick fixes DONT work for teams who are building for success, and all those contracts PC signed this offseason and this season were great deals.

THANK GOD PC is the real GM, not all these fantasy freakers.

  19. bruins says:

that seriously has to be the worst call ive ever seen. thanks refs

  20. cebbie says:

There is a bright side – Keep playing like this and we will get the first and second pick in the draft next year. Something has to happen – I don’t suggest moving some of the current players for a off the hip trade but perhaps a benching or call ups for some new blood need to happen. Unless the trade is for a blue chip player that gets locked up for a few years I would not move anyone who played last night – except Wideman

  21. bigbadbruins1 says:

tank the whole season get are draft picks and torontos theses fucken guys are shit all i hear is oh the injuries SHUT THE FUCK UP they suck get that through your melon heads

  22. Kurt says:

Kovalchuk like players aren’t available that often. He’s the guy we should have traded Thorton for. Kovi is a game changing type player. He is three goals off the league lead. He’s the type of player that we pay Chara for. I say you go after him at all costs. The only player I would not let go is Krejci he has far too much upside. Regardless if he helps get a cup or not this year he could be a critical part of the future because he is still young.

  23. WARDOFTHERINGS says:

I don’t think this team will be a cup contender even with kovalchuck this team has alot of holes to fill on offense and defense if people think Atlanta is going to take a Ryder or a wideman your insane they are going to want three great players a person like wheeler rask and Stuart no way can we replace that depth with the amount of injuries we have now.

  24. Froggy says:

Ilya Kovalchuk will be traded per Bob McKenzie of TSN. He cites Calgary (?) and the Hawks as the frontrunners. Check out his analysis on the TSN website.

  25. Flintstone says:

Newsflash – the B’s will not win the Cup this year. That is all that matters. It does not matter if you where you finish or how well you did if you do not win the Cup. The Cup is all that matters and all that is remembered.

That being said and realizing that the B’s will in no way, shape or form, win the Cup this year, I would rather see them tank, attain 2 truly great picks and then pick up the pieces in the summer. We must rebuild, not continually retool.

  26. WARDOFTHERINGS says:

Penguins Chicago wasington have awesome teams the reason they did it through the draft!!

  27. Haus says:

Hey jmoney, you said sign Kovy to a 10yr., 100mil contract but frontload it to make it a 6mil cap hit right? Cap hits are determined by dividing the total cash by number of years. 100mil divided by 10yrs equals a 10mil cap hit. I take it you didnt go to Harvard with PC and Don Sweeney?

  28. mook says:

i want to see the bruins get david backes…too bad he’s been traded to the canucks.

    shhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  29. da wreck says:

Forget that bullshit “I’d rather see them tank talk”. I live in Edmonton and I hear it every single day and it’s completely ridiculous. Cheering for your team to lose is absolutely insane, no matter what kind of light is at the end of the tunnel. What you’re saying is you’re not a Bruins fan during the season unless they’re winning every game, and you’re a big fan in the summer because of the excitement of free agency and the draft. If that’s the case, being a B’s fan for you is a vicious cycle. They haven’t “won” in 37 years.

I love the Bruins and losing shouldn’t be an option, even if it’s happening more than we’d like.

  30. Jefe77 says:

    Well said da wreck

  31. Haus says:

Lets get em, boys. We need a win here.

  32. bob says:

    peter chiarelli is a joke!

  33. bob says:

    booooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!
