ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli is working the phones trying to swing a deal prior to the mid-February Olympic break. Chiarelli won’t however be shopping the 2010 first round pick he acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs, which could end up amongst the top three at this year’s draft. LeBrun cites a source claiming the Bruins along with the LA Kings are very much interested in Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk but the Thrashers are believed seeking a first round pick, prospect and player as part of the return.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: While it’s obvious the slumping Bruins need something to spark their struggling offensive game I believe it would be a big mistake to acquire Kovalchuk on their part. The Bruins headed into this season considered Stanley Cup contenders but Kovalchuk won’t be enough to cure their overall malaise this season. At best he makes them a second round-and-out team, which scarcely justifies giving up the resources to land him as a playoff rental.

NESN.COM/HOCKEY JOURNAL: reports on the possibility of Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli making some moves in the coming weeks to bolster his sagging team’s performance. The Bruins have been linked to players like Carolina’s Ray Whitney and Calgary’s Dion Phaneuf although Bruins fans shouldn’t hold their breath expecting to see the latter playing for Boston. Edmonton’s Sheldon Souray and Lubomir Visnovsky are available as are Carolina’s Matt Cullen and Joe Corvo. Other options could include Columbus’ Raffi Torres, St. Louis’ Keith Tkachuk and Toronto’s Matt Stajan and Alexei Ponikarovsky.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I don’t see Chiarelli pursuing any players on expensive multi-year contracts like Souray or Visnovsky. Pending UFAs who might be willing to sign with Boston might be more worth his while, like Whitney, Torres, Stajan or Cullen.

I think that they should trade Sanbourin, Thomas and Wideman for Kovlachuck. Regan is a solid Goaltender, who will push and compete with Rask. Regan can be their insurance for the future when Rask leaves for the money. Regan is a local guy who should get a chance to play here in Bosoton. He is a proven winner in Iowa and at UNH. He was Hockey East Player of the year his senior year. Give the guy a shot

I think the Bruins should trade Thornton, Begin, Bitz and Axelsson for Kovalchuk.

    • Bruins says:

just offer him a joe thornton like package: sturm, ference, fallstrom, weller, 4th round pick.

oh wait, kovalchuk is a UFA, so i think we should be fine taking sturm out.

      lolz@you
im sure the thrashers would loooove 2 more goalies! especially an aging one with a big contract, and an ahl starter!
but, wideman def seals the deal! his shot has been known to break bones and he is for sure on an path leading to great things.

      ..um…
