Bruins interested in Selanne

According to the Boston Globe, the Bruins have had talks regarding 39 year old winger Teemu Selanne.  Selanne would be that goal scorer this team desperately lacks.  However, the price tag for a rental player may be steep, and may need to include Mark Stuart and a high draft pick.

If the Bruins could land Selanne for Stuart and a 2nd round pick, I do it in a heart beat.  Mark Stuart is a solid young defenseman but is he really a top 4 defensemen? That’s the question. I honestly do not feel he is.  With his contract expiring at the end of the season, he’ll be due a raise from his 1.5 million dollar salary this past season.  So are the Bruins going to pay Stuart 2 million (or more) a season to be a 5th or 6th defenseman averaging around 15 minutes a night? I certainly hope not.  In this system and current breakdown of next season’s roster, Stuart’s cap hit will simply not fit in with this team (a la Chuck Kobasew this season).  Throwing a young stay at home defenseman (Adam McQuaid) or a veteran free agent (Jay McKee signed with Pittsburgh this season for only 800K) is certainly the way to go when it comes to bottom pairing defensemen.  Then use that money saved to upgrade at forward or in your top 2 defensive pairings.  Although he’s one of my favorite players on this team, it is time to sell high on Stuart.

Selanne Stats:

2009-2010 – 39 games played: 18 goals, 11 assists.

At that pace Selanne would have 39.89 goals over an 82 game schedule.

2008-2009 – 65 games played : 27 goals 27 assists.

the question is, can Selanne still do it? hes been injuried most of this season…

  2. Leafstank says:

    and hes 39..

  3. Haus says:

Ive been calling this one for awhile now. Just wanted to pat myself on the back, thats all.

  4. Bruins46 says:

Stuey is too solid to give up for a rental especially a 39 yr old I say no

  5. Bruins46 says:

Stuey is too solid to give up for a rental especially a 39 yr old I say no way

  6. pearson says:

wow. just wow. stuart isnt a top 4 guy?? wow. hes been injured, but when healthy i would MIGHT argue hes been better than chara this season.

selanne might have the ability to get us some goals, but i wouldnt take it at the expense of stuart AND a pick.

you take awat stuey and wideman is now a lock at the number 2 line… no thanks.

  7. backbruin says:

Yeah that price tag is too high for my liking. The only way i would consider it in any way would be if selanne was going to play 1-2 more years and we could sign him….and that’s stretching it at the very least!!

    go Canada go!!

  8. willisss says:

you never know what they would take. on paper the price tag may look high, look at kovy’s, but what did nj REALLY give up? i think we could grab him for somthign reasonable, and i’m all for it

  9. Froggy says:

Selanne is a bit too long in the tooth for my liking. Sure he can still score and at 39 can still be a threat that the Bruins need, but for Stuey & a pick, the risk is too great. Stuey is still young and learning has a lot of upside.

If I were PC I would consider Seidenberg, Visnovsky or Meszaros for the D and possibly Backes, Horton, Demitra or Handzus for the forwards.

As for today’s game, I am a French-Canadian who despises the Habs. I would dearly love to see Bergeron score the winner for Canada. However his ice time has been limited and I do not see that happening. My heart says Canada; however I feel the USA will eventually prevail 5-4.

I do not buy into the concept at this point that Canada is under significant pressure to win. They are always under such pressure here in Canada and to me the pressure dynamic is a non-starter. As a strong supported of Canadian hockey, I fear that Canada will be hard pressed today to keep their emotions in check and there may well be a steady stream of Canadians to the penalty box. When you couple that with the speed of the USA, it is a recipe for defeat.

All bets are off however if Miller is not on his game. He single-handedly won the game last Sunday and is THE key to any USA gold medal chances today.

  10. Gcole says:

enough with the OLD PEOPLE!! thought the bruins big things last year was to be tough to play against?? whered that go!? were trading away young talent for old guys! come on!

  11. Jay says:

I think that Julien just doesn’t understand how to use Stuart. What kind of d pairing does chara need. A solid defensivly (so chara can take offensive risks) fast (to retrieve dumpins and get the puck tochara who can pass. And someone who shows chara how to play with snarl ie Aaron ward. Now Stuart sounds perfect for that

  12. Bzibziak says:

I don’t want Selanne if the cost will be Stuart or Wheeler. Wheeler has become untouchable now since his game has risen, and we need Stuart for next year. Can’t throw away players only to make the 2nd rd if that. I don’t think we are strong enough to amke a run this year, and I don’t want to throw away valuable assets for a rental. Now if they want to go after a betetr younger players who will stay with team, then make the trade. But I don’t want Kariya, Tkhuck. Rather have Torres, Horton, or try to get either Brad Boyes or Clowe fro SJ. Bruisn should also try to get rid of Thomas for forward.

  13. mcpuck says:

I like Selanne, always have, but Stuarts upside is great, and if the Bruins don’t want to pay him to play on a bottom pairing for next year, then trade him, but I think he could be used to bring back more than Selanne.

There’s other guys available too that I’d rather have than Teemu… just don’t think it’d be the right move. I certainly won’t complain if he WAS wearing a B’s sweater though.

  14. Bruins says:

no way. stuart might be our best d-man after chara, or he will be soon. perfect stay at home guy. i’d rather see if we can use hunwick to get someone

  15. Bruins says:

who does everyone think we’ll get? i think we’ll end up with hamhuis and torres. i’d like hamhuis and whitney but that might be too expensive

  16. pearson says:

i think its a collective “dont do it.”

first time in awhile we all agree, and ill drink to that!

    GO USA!

  17. backbruin says:

BOSTON GLOBE: Fluto Shinzawa reports on possible moves by the Bruins, who’re seeking a defenseman and a scoring forward. Three potential defense possibilities include Atlanta’s Pavel Kubina, Carolina’s Joe Corvo and Nashville’s Dan Hamhuis, with the latter being the youngest and most affordable. Shinzawa claims the Bruins have “kicked the tires” on Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne. Potential targets for rivals GMs could be Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart but Shinzawa believes the Bruins could put their draft picks in play. Toronto’s first rounder is not available but they do have their own first rounder in this year’s draft plus three second round picks, plus two picks in each of the first two rounds in 2011.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Bruins will make one or two moves by the deadline and I think they’ll part with some of those draft picks rather than a roster player.

    • backbruin says:

This is what i believe as well, you won’t see a stuart or wheeler go anywhere for a 39 year old rental that may retire next year….and they could give a solid draft pick along with a prospect for hamhuis!!!

Don’t expect P.C to give up any roster players!!

maybe a prov player and a pick!!!

  18. #4 says:

    Right on pearson

How do I say it uhhh. Fuck that?

I agree with willis we could grab him for something more reasonable then stuey-high pick. That is just too much for a 39 year old with questionable heart, he didnt do much for finland in the olympics.

On the other hand IronMan Stuey has been one of our top dman I wouldnt see us moving forward with Chara, Stuey, Morris, Boychuck, McQuaid as our top 5 hint hint. We can lose the other 2 (wideman-hunwick) and replace them via another trade, or free agency

  19. #4 says:

    * I wouldnt MIND Seeing us move forward…. * Hate not editing posts.

Anyways I just saw 2 Cops playing in full uniform playing pick up street hockey with a bunch of teenagers in Canada jerseys on NBC LOL thats hillarious I couldnt picture american cops doing that.

  20. leafstank says:

im shocked details havent leaked on this trade deal thats supposed to be in place and just waiting for the roster freeze to be lifted…

  21. willisss says:

i hope boychuck isn’t trade bait. hes going to be ( in my mind, already is) the real deal. you’ll notice when you go to the garden, hes the last one off the ice during warm ups, he levels people, he knows the game. i can see allot of teams that would be interested in that kind of player.

  22. Pearson says:

Since when does kessel backcheck!? Whoa.

Hell of a game we have here guys. And after its over we get our b’s back. Booyaaa

  23. Froggy says:

The Canadians now look ripe for the taking.

    Next goal wins the gold!!

  24. leafstank says:

what time does the roster freeze lift? tonight at midnight?

  25. Baltimore Bruins Fan says:

No way…this is insane…PC needs a real scorer, Selane is no better than Sturm, which is ok but the B’s need a guy who is a real threat, unfortunat;ey the Finnish Flash isnt what he used to be!

  26. willisss says:

holy shit on shit, then back on more shit…mixed with fuck and shit ass and more shit ass combo….4 gallons of beer on the rub, along with lamp glass, and what i’m pretty sure is a deep dish pizza…is what consists of the celebration that just went down at my house…allow me to chug a beer before i continue…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………damn my shirt is a fucking mess now…

    this rules

  27. Froggy says:

That what happens when you sit back & try to hold the other team off. The best defense in such a situation is offense. The puck has to be carried out of and over the red line. The Canadians were just content to continually lob it out.

Game, set 7 match for the USA in the 1st 5 mins of OT. Lagenbrunner the winner.

  28. willisss says:

time to drink….allot…..ill be making a post at like 1030 when i cant feel feelings

  29. bigbadbruins1 says:

wooooooooooooooo way to go canada the gold stays right where it belongs wooooooooooooooooooo now back to the bssssssssss cant wait

  30. pearson says:

congrats canada. drink up. its your game and you def. deserved that, especially on home ice.

i just want to say that i HATE crosby and i cannot think of anyone i would have hated more to see get the game winning goal.

this hurts almost as much as scott walkers goal last playoffs.

  31. leafstank says:

thornton scoring woulda been worse. IMO.

  32. bigbadbruins1 says:

well said pearson but now get the bsssssssssss back congrats to canada and the states cause everyone was counting out the states so give credit where its do except that little bitch kessel

    • leafstank says:

yeah. kessel doesnt deserve the medal.

      • pearson says:

disagree on this one. just because he didnt fit in boston, and we all want him to suck for toronto, doesnt mean hes a bad player. i think his role for usa was alot differant than hes been used to his entire career. he was a solid back-checker the entire tourney.

you need people to play differant roles to win medals, you cant all be the superstar that you are on your nhl team.

russia learned the hard way, and canada learned as the tourney went on that same idea. they pulled together in the end and (IMO) upset the best team of the tournament.

cmon man, root for your country, not the enemies created nhl rivalries.

      • leafstank says:

dont care. kessel didnt deserve to be on that team.

      • Bruins says:

he really did suck though. they put him there to score goals. he’s not a bergeron or toews type player that they take and expect them to kill penalties/play defensive hockey. he was given top 6 duties and failed miserably

  33. HabMan says:

WHOOOOO!!!! My Canadians beat your team!!! Just like Canadiens will beat Bruins Tuesday!!! Great week for hockey!!!!

    • leafstank says:

1st off, they arent YOUR canadians. and 2nd, montreal isnt beating boston, i promise they wont for the rest of the year

  34. fuckoff habs cant wait to smash u french faggots

  35. Jefe77 says:

Hey Canada, great tourney. Congrats, and enjoy the celebrations.

But you know what? USA deserves more credit for their silver than Canada does gold. As a matter of fact, I stand by my statement that USA deserved to win that game.

On paper, Canada should have rolled to the top seed. Should have rolled Slovakia, should have rolled USA. It was the game last Sunday against a team that plays a style that woke Canada up, and helped them to their most dominant game against the russians.

As much as I love my northern brothers, and understand the role they play in the NHL, its USA who overachieved. They showed the Canadians some good North American hockey, and went down with all engines firing. Not bad for a team full of kids vs a Canadian all star team.

    Great game, great Olympics.

    • Hammer says:

      Yeah, you hold onto that.

    • leafstank says:

i agree man. if you look at their roster, its no where near as impressive as the canadian roster. but they showed what they could do.

      • Jefe77 says:

Agreed, and taking nothing away from Canada. Hey, if they can field an all-star team like that and still have players to pick than its pretty obvious where the rest of the world is compared to them. The rest of the elite teams can always compete with Canada, but the depth level is off the charts.

Congrats to Patrice. Good to see he actually got some ice time in that game.

  36. Bruins says:

rumours are that blake wheeler is on the move..whaaaat??? it’s from eklund so don’t read too much into it i guess

  37. Pearson says:

I saw that too. Makes sence though right? Trade away the scoring for some much needed defense…………….

  38. Jefe77 says:

Whole lotta sense. Better be bs, we need to be patient with him.

  39. Richardo says:

    Leopold to the Penguins!!! ~TSN
