Trent Whitfield out for the season

According to Joe Haggerty of CSNNE and Jimmy Murphy of espnboston.com, the Bruins will be without Trent Whitfield this season because of an achilles injury.  Whitfield only played in 16 NHL games last season but was arguably a better option as the fourth line center over Steve Begin.  Begin simply did not bring it every night but did start to show up at the end of the season. Injuries or not, Begin was brought in to add energy to this lineup but on most nights no energy was provided.  Whitfield while all his skills were very limited, was good on faceoffs and brought it every night.

The Whitfield injury will not have a huge affect on the makeup of the Bruins roster this season. However, he would have probably been Peter Chiarelli’s, and obviously Claude Julien’s, first choice when it comes to an injury call-up.  Now that he is out for the season, if there were to be an injury, a younger player such as Joe Colborne, Jordan Caron, Max Sauve or even Zach Hamill may be given a look.

  1. Bruins says:

You gotta feel for Whitfield. This might be his career at this age and that injury.

From the B’s standpoint this isn’t bad though. Whitfield was a safe player. He wouldn’t hurt the team but he wouldn’t really help it either. This will force them to use younger guys with higher upside like Caron, Sauve, Colborne, Marchand and even Hamill as callups. Reich is still there as the only veteran that could take that opportunity away from the kids at this point I think.

  2. ohniner says:

This doesn’t affect our team we have lots of talent to replace him. I agree its to bad for him no chance for him next year on this team. Thanks Trent for your hard work and compete level !!!

  3. Gcole says:

i had to think for a little bit who the hell trent whitfield was. guess this means its nothing too important haha.

  4. willisss says:

    GOD DAMN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its over boys i say tank the season

  5. pearson says:

no biggie, i think they were just trying to post a new blog so that the comments didnt keep piling up.

  6. bela7744 says:

i have a feeling seguin is not going to be in the line up.

  7. bela7744 says:

i have a feeling seguin is not going to be in the line up.sometimes the bruins like to let there rookies tit suck in the minors for a year or two or threeeeee

    • Jefe77 says:

Seguin is not eligible to play in Providence for 3 seasons!

If he doesn’t make Bostons roster, he is going back to juniors.

Surprised more Bruins fans dont realize this,…its quite significant

    • pearson says:

now what has he done so far that that makes you think hes not ready to learn and play at the nhl level?

he destroyed the ohl last year, hes not going to learn much there….

      • Bruins says:

Yeah really. “We want you to develop your game more so uhh… go win another league MVP, then maybe we’ll bring you up.”

People have to realize this isn’t a Tavares situation where he’ll be relied on heavily. He can be eased in with one of our centers and have Bergeron and Recchi as a veteran influence.

  8. Mook says:

    i say we tank it.

  9. jimmy50 says:

As most said this injury allows our youth to be first in line on call ups throughout the season until Sturm comes back. As long as Jeremy Reich doesn’t get the nod we should be all set.

Still think the current roster is what we go with this season. Not sure PC will keep us out of cap issues?

    • #4 says:

“Not sure PC will keep us out of cap issues?”

Damnit I didnt realize Bruinsrumors.wordpress counted against the cap!Quick everyone jump infront of a car and put us on LTIR

  10. Bruins says:

Huet’s cap hit disappears because he was loaned to a Swiss team. Seems to be in the spirit of the new CBA…

Here’s hoping that some African team is interested in Ryder. I heard the Zimbabwe Zebras are looking to fill a hole on their fourth line. (E5)

  11. Mook says:

Huet to Switzerland is just like demoting him to the minors. We could do that with Ryder too…

  12. Gcole says:

this just in: zack hamill was abducted by a UFO last year, still has not been found.

  13. moast says:

Hey Gcole….that wasn’t an unidentified Flying Object, that was Blake Wheeler going offside!

  14. #4 says:

    Reading the last 6 posts…

LOL Its the middle of summer and we have to talk about is a freak injury to trent whitfield and this is the sh!t our comments become LOL>

  15. moast says:

What do you think it would take to get Rick Nash next year…..We may be able to do it cap wise?
Don’t kill me on here before you see this:

    Nash-Savard-Horton
    Wheeler-Krejci-Caron
    Colborne-Bergeron-Seguin
    Thornton-Campbell-Paille

    • JRy says:

what happened to lucic? is he in your proposed rick nash deal or did you just forget him?

      • moast says:

Wow….Brutal of me….one of my favorite players and I forget him…..bad Bruins fan Bad!

        Anyway….here try this:

        Nash-Savard-Horton
        Wheeler-Krejci-Lucic
        Colborne-Beregeron-Seguin
        Thornton-Campbell-Caron/Paille

I know it doens’t solve the seguin centre issue but its pretty fuckin sick!!!

    • Bruins says:

I think Nash is one of the most untouchable players in the league. He’s the only elite player in a market that’s desparate for success/fans and he was just locked up to a long-term deal. Unless you want to massively overpay for him it would be too hard to explain trading your only star for picks/prospects/younger players to Columbus’ fan.

  16. BosBrn77 says:

Aaron Ward retires!! I wish him nothing but the best. He was definitely a class act while he was here… and everywhere he played!

  17. Mook says:

so much for kaberle to the kings…they just signed willie mitchell.

i watched kaberle all year (because i live in toronto)…he is not special. aside from the giveaways this season, wideman is pretty good in comparison. kaberle can pass, but is soft and is a defensive liability.

  18. EricD says:

ill be pissed to see kaberle in a Bruins jersey, he plays way too soft, and we dont need him at all… Chara Seidendburg Boychuk and Stuart are gonna be are top 4 def with ferrence and hunwick there too.. but i would LOVE to see Alexandrov come up to play some games… that kid looks good, real good…

    Lucic-Savard-Horton
    Wheeler-Krecji-Ryder
    Seguin-Bergeron-Recchi
    Paille-Cambpell-Thorton

    Chara-Boychuk
    Seidenburg-Stuart
    Ferrence-Hunwick

Call ups i want to see happen- Colbourne, Caron, Alexandrov, Hammill (if he can actually do something in the AHL), i would def give Marchand another chance…i cant think of anyone else at the moment

  19. EricD says:

one more thing… Does anyone know when this year’s State of the Bruins is? i went last years and really enjoyed it, if anyone knows let me know!

  20. Mook says:

    question!

cost of a cab ride from the airport to the sheraton boston (39 Dalton street)?

Is there a better way to get there? Subway or whatever (are there subways?)

    • willisss says:

      mook go the T:

take to the blue line right out of the airport. the airport runs a silver line but there is a blue line junction.**look for the blue line inbound to govrnt center NOT WONDERLAND ( unless you want to go to revere, and trust me you dont)** Once you get to govrnt. center via blue line, there is a green line junction and your looking for inbound to riverside **do not get on outbound to lechmere** once on the green line to riverside its like 5 or 6 stops to hynes conventional center. thats your stop, the sheraton boston is right next to hynes. thats the best, and the cheapest way to go. just dont drink too much ( like i always do) because i cant even explain how shitty it is to have to piss when your stuck on the T. i had to hold it from park street to riverside one time, i almost died.
its a lot easier then it sounds, trust me

      • willisss says:

oh and a shuttle bus will take you right to the blue line from the airport. its the silver line. the silver line are buses not trains. its just a way to get to the main train lines.

      • Mook says:

        thanks man. sounds complicated!

      • #4 says:

        Revere LOL….

Mook as an everday rider of boston public transportation for the last 5 years..

Head up, NO EYE CONTACT with anyone “sketchy”, and try to ignore the awful smell.

      • #4 says:

        oh one last thing,

If your buying say 10$ worth of T passes from the vending machine but you only have a 20$. It will give you 10 1$ coins which is a huge pain in the ass.

      • willisss says:

just use your credit card and keep a charlie pass, best way to roll

  21. pearson says:

everyone seems to have LUCIC-SAVARD-HORTON for the first line. i cant say that i disagree, but is there other possibilities?

maaaaybe Wheeler-Savard-Horton? that way wheeler gets his chances to use his size in front of the net, and can also start to snipe on a fast break with savard feeding him?

i know that the lucic-savard-kessel line worked to almost perfection 2 years ago, and horton is the kessel replacement, but couldnt lucic be utilized better on a line that freed up space for krejci/ryder?

    • Bruins says:

When Wheeler was tried with Savard last year he was terrible. If he’d ever actually use his size or could snipe he might be a possibility…

I really think you have to at least start out with a Lucic-Savard-Horton line. There is alot of combinations you can go with to find chemistry though. I’ve been pushing for Lucic-Bergeron-Caron myself.

      • pearson says:

and recchi with krecji and seguin?

i was under the impression that the definite combos would be savard with horton, and bergy with rex.

i was also thinking, why not hunwick with chara. matt was pretty damn good the year before last. i think it goes without saying hes our 5th best defender but if you put him with the best one, he could improve drastically all while balancing out the d-unit.

then every other, or every third shift, putting ference out there instead.

one thing is for sure, i think part of last seasons failure was due to no line chemistry. i hope they stick guys together and only tinker one of the wings if at all. i think theyd benift greatly from sticking with the same linemates and keeping the pair of savard-horton, krecji-seguin, and bergy-rex. with lucic, wheeler, and ryder swapping around trying to find the best fit.

      • #4 says:

Pearson Completely Disagree with the Chara-Hunwick Combo….

Its got to be Chara-Siedes they clicked so well last year. Siedes is real good at getting the puck up and out of the D zone and playing solid Nuetral zone cover which allows chara to play his big hitting, shooting game more and we need a big offensive year for chara this year.

2nd Line should be Boychuch-Stuart for a bash brothers combo and finally Ferrence/Hunwick where ferrence has enough sense to cover up hunwicks defensive liabilities. I also can see Alexandrov/McQuaid breaking the lineup this year if ferrence/hunwick arent working out very well together.

Im thinking that a first line of
        Lucic-Savard-Horton
        Chara-Siedes

Is going to be one of the biggest and toughest first lines in the league.

      • Bruins says:

Yeah I realize Bergy-Rex is a lock, but I’m more talking about a Lucic-Bergeron-Caron line for the future, although I wouldn’t mind seeing them tried out even for a little bit this year. My reasoning is that that line would dominate other teams along the boards and be an awesome puck-possesion team cycling it along the boards if they need to hold a lead late in games.

As for Hunwick, I really don’t want him up there. It’s Seidenberg’s job to lose. The only way I change that up is if Boychuk struggles a bit in a top four role, then maybe try him with Chara.

I actually thin Hunwick could be pushed out of a spot by Alexandrov this year. I’ve been waiting for him to be a Bruin ever since he was drafted.

i do love Seguin with DK but I’m thinking they might use Bergy and Rex as his mentors.

  22. JRy says:

I no there isn’t cap room as of right now but there WAS rumors the bruins were interested in bringing back bill guerin…..I liked guerin and would like him to come back for a year but I don’t think there’s a spot for him…what do u guys think?

    • BosBrn77 says:

I for one have mixed feelings! I would LOVE to see Guerin back in Boston, but that would take away from another youngster getting play time!

  23. bruins4eva says:

its a shame cuz im gonna miss my boy MIRO THE HERO…he was the man last year in the playoffs…

    • #4 says:

I will never forget that dance or sturms face after scoring the winner in game 5 or 6(w/e) vs the habs 2 years ago. Both were bruins epic.

  24. moast says:

I for one would love to have Miro back this season for a one year deal.
    Satan-Krejci-Seguin
No size or grit but a pure offensize explosion!!

  25. BosBrn77 says:

Looks like our old friend Matt Lashoff is now a Leaf! Poor kid just can’t catch a break!!

  26. willisss says:

too much matt hunwick hating, I am a fan, always will be

  28. bbears24 says:

Can the season start already, I’m so sick of all this savard talk

  29. Eric D says:

savard and thomas talk is dead.. savard and thomas will not be moved… why you ask? becuase savard and thomas have both gone public about the trade rumors… the bruins would never alow any player to go public about front office shit.. the bruins are the most secret organization it the world… did anyone know thomas was hurt enough that he needed surgery? no noone did.. anyway my point is the bruins are set where they are.. the only roster change we will see is someone moving between the bruins and Pbruins.. the bruins are NOT making any more trades this offseason.. I GUAREN-DAMN-TEE IT

  30. mook says:

“I really don’t look at it as pressure,” Seguin said of his Boston debut. “I’m expecting to go into camp and gain the opportunity. And when I go, I want to earn my spot. I look at it as more like fun and opportunity than pressure.”

Moments before changing into a crisp new Bruins jersey, the 18-year-old forward admitted that he had never been much of a card collector.

“I think I have a couple of Wayne Gretzky ones,” Seguin said with a smile. “I’ve got some Pokemon cards, but I guess that’s not hockey.”

    Seguin’s nickname: Pokemon

  31. moast says:

So, The Hockey News claims that the team to win the Cup is Vancouver (which is frickin stacked) and the seconf on that list is the Almighty B’s!!
    Any thoughts on this?
    Premature? Bang On?
I feel they will make it at least to the Eastern Finals this year!!!

    • Bruins says:

Vancouver looks good and is insanely deep but they don’t have that one stud defenseman that Cup Winning teams always seem to have.

I love the look of the B’s right now. I put them at or near the top of the list.

You hardly ever see any preseason predictions of them doing well either. Last time I remember the B’s getting this much praise was when we were the number two team behind the senators for everyone’s predictions coming out of the lockout. Brad Isbister adding some size to the top line, Zhamnov being the skilled number two center, a healthy dose of Dave Scatchard, Shawn McEachern, and Dan LaCouture, the best young goalie in the game in Raycroft and the best goalie prospect in Toivonen. How could you go wrong?

  32. Bruins says:

When I was thinking back to 05-06 I can’t help but remember how many plugs this team has had since the lockout before Chiarelli showed up. Czerkawski, Mowers, Fitzgerald, Chistov, Scatchard, Reasoner, Tanabe, Moran, York, Langfeld, LaCouture, McEachern, Bochenski, Tenkrat, Hoggan, Donovan, Stastny. It’s like a whole list of Trent Whitfields, and that’s just off the top of my head. A bunch of guys that really did nothing. There’s no one on the roster like that today I don’t think.

    • moast says:

I just puked in my mouth when I looked at your list of definate plugs.
as much as Chia has put us in cap hell, I still like what he has done in comparison to the last ten or so years.
I think the only forwards on the team that would fall under plug (in relation to salary) would be wheeler and Ryder and they are both potential 20+scorers……we are stacked!
      BRING ON HOCKEY DAMMIT!!!!!

  33. Jefe77 says:

Spector reported today that PC was recently quoted “he expects Savard to remain a Bruin under his contract years”.

Lets hope he can move a player, and we can all rest easy about Savvy.

  34. BosBrn77 says:

    Two things….

    1) Savard’s agent, Kelly blasted Bettman on an Ottawa radio station. Saying “Can you imagine the lawsuit that would happen?” if Savard’s contract was rejected. He said he is always on the side of the owners. I wonder if he just added some unwanted heat to Savard?

    2) Neely received the Lester Patrick award today! WOOT!! The 8th wonder of the world lives on!!

Oh yeah…. Start the damn season already!! LOL

  35. lucas says:

i think we should bring back Miro Satan. I know we dont really have the cap room but if we trade/waive/demote ryder (whic i think would be a mistake cuz i think he can score 20+ this year) then we would have the room for satan. Even tho i think ryder will have a good year i’d rather have Miro.

    • Gcole says:

il take satan over ryder any day! fuck ryder im done trying to defend him and say he had a rough year, whatever, hes a pussy anyways

    • pearson says:

thats just not an original idea. i think “demote ryder” has been the most overused statement by everyone here, and yes, ive prolly said it too.

yea putting ryder in prov could happen, but not to bring back miro. yes, satan had his shining moments but theres is ZERO chance the organization would eat ryders 4 mil so they could take a chance on miro. who has more potential for the year? ryder. its a contract year. even if it was close, ryder would still win because he already has what miro doesnt: a contract.

      • Gcole says:

I meant it more like if you had a choice between the two (ignoring salary cap and shit) I would prefer Satan because I’ve grown to dislike ryder

      • jimmy50 says:

not defending Ryder either but we know his potential. He is in a contract year. Last he did have a good series v. Buffalo in which we needed to win that series.

      • lucas says:

Thats why i think Ryder will have a good year this year cuz hes playing for a contract. But we do need the cap space.

    • really says:

yea that last time Ryder had a contract year was with Montreal and he only mustard thirty points. I believe that was the ’07-’08 season.

  36. Mook says:

when both satan and ryder are at the top of their games, ryder is the superior player. let’s hope ryder plays like it is a contract year (which it is).

  37. oneandonly#4 says:

Fluto Shinzawa reports Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli spoke with center Marc Savard last month after the latter told the Ottawa Sun he was “hurt” by the trade rumors about him, telling Savard he would not be traded.

“Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli confirmed Friday that he had spoken to Marc Savard and told the center the Bruins will not trade him.

“We told Marc we are not moving him and he is part of the organization,” Chiarelli told ESPNBoston.com.”

About fucking time they came out and said something! PC acknowledged that there were trade talks, but nothing that enticed him to trade Savvy!

Hopefully we can put this behind us now!!

    • Jefe77 says:

I couldn’t be happier to have read that,…and its exactly what Marc and all of us have been waiting for.

I think PC was in a position where all considerations needed be made, all options weighed out on how to come under the cap, and Marc’s contract is probably the most trade-able one PC has.

Ah well, i am looking forward to watching my favorite Bruin rip it up next year with this team.

This, awesome fuckin team. I am SO stoked on our roster right now!!!!

      • BosBrn77 says:

Well said! I feel the exact same way. Could some tweeks be made? Sure! But I like the team as it sits!

      • pearson says:

whether or not there really is bad blood… you know that marc is gonna have a chip on his shoulder. i dont mean to say that all of this was a setup by PC to light a fire under his ass but after the way the year ended last year you gotta think neeley would be trying to ignite him.

-imo- an angry savard is exactly what we need. put him on a line with two other angry mean players in lucic and horton and they are gonna explode.

      • Jefe77 says:

Hope all is well with you Bosbrn, and yup, a couple tweaks could be had, but PC is in good shape for Ryder to step it up, as he knows he could get buried in the minors. The situation with Thomas and Ryder could work very favorably. They both have so much to prove. I agree Pearson, chip on the shoulder Savvy couldn’t be a better situation!

        Here we GO!!!!

      • BosBrn77 says:

All is good here Jefe, thank you! I hope the same can be said with you and your family too?!

I agree with the chip on the shoulder. Savard could be an absolute force this year. And how much better could Lucic be playing on a line with Savard and Horton? I’ll bet Milan is dieing to put last year in the past!

Well said on Ryder, too! He must hear the whispers of a demotion? Granted, he would be paid the same… but riding buses instead of planes? I think he may come out with guns a blazing as well!

On paper, this team looks like a force! Lets just hope the produce what they should!!!
