3 up 3 down

UP

1. Patrice Bergeron.  Great all around game from Bergeron, who collected his first points of the season.  Bergeron was arguably the best forward on the ice tonight, and made two great passes which resulted in goals.

2. Tim Thomas. Thomas was unbelievable in net tonight.  Washington was throwing everything at him and Thomas showed why he is a former Vezina winner.

3. Jordan Caron.  Caron plays like a veteran in this league with the poise he plays with. He made great decisions with the puck, especially on the penalty kill.  Caron was also rewarded with his second goal of the year because of a beautiful pass from Bergeron. Hard to see Paille getting back in the lineup at Caron’s expense.

DOWN

1.  Tim Thomas’ passing/clearly attempts. A bad pass resulted in an easy open net goal for the Capitals.  Thomas has always been shaky with the puck but other than that he has looked unbelievable in net.

2. Blake Wheeler. Is it just me or down Wheeler look scared/nervous when ever he has the puck?  A fast paced, uptempo kind of game really exposes Wheeler’s weaknesses handling the puck.  However, he should get credit for trying to shoot more.

3. The defensemen. The defense had a lot of mental lapses and bad turnovers in the defensive zone. They can thank Thomas for baling them out on multiple occassions.  Ference and Hunwick lead the list but Seidenberg played great, threw his body around, and is starting to find his game.

  1. Whopperfoo says:

I couldn’t see the rest of the ice, but from the angle thomas sent that puck out (the pass that resulted in the goal) it looked like he was trying to make a big breakout pass pretty far up ice. If I remember correctly, there was a defenceman and someone else open on the other side of the ice closer to goal.

  2. Mook says:

thomas was trying to spring wheeler on a breakaway. whatever, no big deal.

so how many games in a row do the bruins need before we f-off with the trade talk? all this “ryder sucks” talk sure disappeared quickly!

  3. Oneandonly#4 says:

With the way the B’s are playing now it is easy to find fault with those that can’t keep up with the rest. Wheeler, Ferrence & Hunwick stand out particularly and if the end result is a win, then that is good enough for me.

Their play however is a concern and I’m sure it is for PC as well. Some interesting decisions are required by PC when Savard and Sturm return. Whose salary or salaries do we shed? Ryder has been mentioned most often and for good reason based on last year. However he has upped his game and if he continues to play the way he has, who will be the odd man out? Sturm, maybe? Perhaps a combination – Paille, Wheeler & Ferrence or Hunwick? Who knows. Perhaps the Savard rumour-mill will begin to churn again.

I don’t know what will be the end result; however I would not send down/back Seguin or Caron under any circumstance. They are cap-friendly, learning their trade and are contributing effectively. Returning them would hamper their progree IMO.

    • Bruins says:

If Seguin plays 5 more games with Boston he’s here to stay. He can’t be sent back after that.

    • Gcole says:

umm blake wheeler??? what does he do? miss the net every time. fall over. look scared. think of it THIS way. would you rather have wheeler or sturm? i vote sturm.

  4. Oneandonly#4 says:

    *progress

  5. Bruins says:

Yeah Caron really deserves to be on this team. When Savard and Sturm come back Ryder (even though he’s playing well) and some combination of Wheeler/Hunwick/Paille will be the odd men out.

  6. ConcernedSaavyfan says:

Guys not to put a damper on things(Cuz im loving the Bruins right now)But im not sure Savvy will be back untill sometime in January at the EARLIEST! Last night he said in an interview that he is progressing well and feeling better but he’s still got a ways to go! He also said that if he’s not back in Nov-Dec he would not be concerned as he wants to take his time! When the Fuck is this guy planning to return?? In the New year? This is ridiculas….I feel bad for the guy but fuck!!!

    • Bruins says:

      Patience…

I think we can all agree that him coming back in the playoffs was a mistake. No need going through that again. He should not be back until he’s fully healthy, even if that is in 2011.

      • moast says:

I agree…..its jsut hockey….he has a wife and kids to think about.
        Wheeler, Hunwick, Paille gonners.
I really hope that they keep Ryder some how and I will be super pissed if Caron and Marchand get replaced!

  7. jmed says:

think its time to start rotating in Mcquade and Bartkowski….lets put some competition on the dee

  8. backbruin says:

I completely disagree, Wheeler has looked the exact opposite to me!! He looks way better, tougher “to this point” in the corners and faster!!

Scared, nervous i guess were watching different wheeler’s!

In fact there was no downs to that game! despite a bad clearing attempt by thomas the game couldn’t have been better on all facets.

We don’t need to nit pick so much! they looked strong and it’s 4 in a row! nit pick when it’s warranted please!

    • mook says:

agree. wheeler is definitely grinding more, but his finesse sucks. hey, you can’t have it both ways from a $2mil player.

at this point, i think we ask recchi to retire, demote paille and trade sturm before january (good luck!).

i know i’ve said this a million times, but i’ll be visiting boston on november 19-21.
      fri: celtics
      sat: bruins
      sun: pats
how early must i go to get a fenway tour and/or a sam adams brewery tour? i gotta spend my days effectively 🙂

      • willisss says:

I’m going to try to score tickets for the sat game

      • #4 says:

Sam Adams Brewery tour is pretty short you dont need to get there early at all. You could prob go early b4 bruins game. Get a little tanked up for free and then head to the Greatest till the B’s… Hmm I might have to do that haha.

        Never done Fenway tour.

  9. #4 says:

I think wheeler should be locked in the rink with Rask one night and have to shoot the puck until he scores 1,000 times. To fix his problem overall game is great.

Shooting all of bergys great passes over the net or right at the goalie makes me cringe.

    • Bruins says:

Wheeler is the only reason for Bergeron’s unimpressive stats right now. I swear he shanks about 5 of his beauty feeds a game.

      • backbruin says:

Actually Bruins, i’ve seen Wheeler set Bergy up 3-4 times this year wide open and bergy hasn’t cashed!!!

Bergy has a sneaky hard shot and needs to start burying these oppurtunities!!

Give wheels a chance here i think we may change our opinion on him soon!

  10. patrick says:

I went on the Sam Adams brew tour on Sat late afternoon mook. the Fenway tour I did early afternoon on a monday.

  11. Gcole says:

i wanted to cry for thomas when he let that goal in, especially with the RIDICULOUS game he had.

  12. Gcole says:

bring up mcgrattan and lets see boogaard vs mcgrattan!

  13. backbruin says:

And oh ya, Ihaven’t read all the posts so i may sound redundent, but did anyone else love recchi on the point for our PP!!! I loved it and i do remember the days when he was with the habs that he was back there!

crisp passes hitting tape from his own end!! soft passes setting guys up!! i don’t know but i would like to see him back there again tonight!

  14. backbruin says:

Savy update sounds positive here it is!

Marc Savard appears to be recovering well for the Boston Bruins.

According to a tweet by Joe Haggerty “Marc Savard skated again early Saturday morning before teammates and continues to make slow, steady progress from post-concussion syndrome”. This is some good news for Savard and his owners. Oct. 23 – 12:35 pm et

I will go out there and say early December, best case scenario! late November may be a stretch but you never know!

  15. Gcole says:

Angie else kinda mad Thomas isn’t playing? Guys on fire and they don’t keep playing him…

    • pearson says:

i mean, with all due respect to timmy.. his IS old(ish), coming off surgery, he just beat the caps twice in a row, and tuukka has to play some of the time…

      • Gcole says:

That’s not what they did last year whn rask played good, fucking bullshit. Now rask just allowed another goal as I’m typing.. PUT THOMAS IN

  16. Bruins says:

Lol Tuukka is not getting the bounces this season at all.

  17. Bruins says:

Relax Gcole those goals were both freak bounces.

    • Gcole says:

I know it’s not that’s he’s doing bad, more that you have a goalie playing like a god and you take him out to start the other to keep him “fresh” which they didn’t do for Thomas last year. If it’s not broke don’t fix it

      • Bruins says:

You can’t play the guy every game. He needs a breather after a while. We have two great goalies here.

      • pearson says:

last year they were in a race for one of the last playoff spot. we’re 4-1 right now. there is no desperation for wins right now so you need to keep both goalies active or else thomas may become tired while rask becomes rusty.

just stop arguing for thomas. hes great. we all love him. but we arent hurt by starting tuukka.

ps. your posts give the indication that there is a clear cut #1 and backup. everyone in the country knows the bruins have the best goalie tandem…. now lets use it.

  18. Bruins says:

Pretty terrible period until the end there. Horton is on a 6 game point streak now. A point every game he’s been a Bruin.

  19. Bruins says:

Recchi looks terrible so far this year. Hopefully the old man gets his legs going like last year.

    • backbruin says:

bruins he was fantastic on the pp last year and julien is playing him way less minutes…don’t over react because of a pass that handcuffed him!!!

guys relax tons of time here!!

so much over reaction is getting old!

  20. backbruin says:

Please don’t say people are blaming rask for those 3 goals???

two weird deflections and a breakaway????

cmon guys freak goals and a breakaway!!!

    give him some slack!

  21. backbruin says:

I’ll tell ya i have seen bergy miss two wide open nets TONIGHT!!!!

    HE NEEDS TO START CASHING!!

  22. Bruins says:

Holy FUCK on that Krech pass!

  23. Bruins says:

Campbell really starting to piss me off. How many dumb penalties can you take?

    • Gcole says:

The guys a penalty magnet lol everything he does he somehow ends up with a penalty

    • willisss says:

overall i have been surprisingly impressed with his game so far. we could have gone without the dumb calls but he does play with some grit

      • Bruins says:

Not arguing that but some of the penalties he takes have the potential to be backbreakers. And he can’t even use one of his better strengths (PK ability) when he’s in the box. Luckily our PK has been strong.

  24. JRy says:

Blake Wheeler looked real good on the penalty kill. He better not turn out to be a more expensive Daniel Paille!
Mark Stuart is a beast, better re-sign that guy.
I feel bad for Tuukka because he finally gets his shot and now he gets boned with some bad bounces. Oh well, long year.

  25. WARD says:

mark stuart is the reason we lost this game.

    • #4 says:

Its as much His fault as it Rask, Chara, Recchi all 4 combined to allow the 3 goals. The rangers got lucky wont happen again.

Plus 3 fights and Mark Stuart pounded on avery love it.

      • JRy says:

Ya I was referring to the big hit then the Avery fight….Stuart may not have had a great game but he’s the type of player I want to see on the bruins.

  26. Bruins says:

Wheeler did look good today but he still doesn’t generate anything offensively. We have Paille sitting up in the press box for half the price if we need a defensive guy that can PK.

I am continually impressed with Caron. He looks like a vet out there and has developed some nice chemistry with Bergeron.

I thought the defense as a whole played well, just some unfortunate bounces.

Rask was ok. He had some great saves in the third and just had a couple unlucky bounces. First one maybe he can control the rebound on but that was a shot at his shoulder, so no big deal (I still think that it might have been over the crossbar anyways). Second one no chance due to Stuart’s gaffe. Third one yeah maybe, but it was a breakaway as his first shot of the period.

  27. Bruins says:

What’s the word on Boychuk? Only positive that could come out of an injury would be Bartkowski impressing and replacing Hunwick when Boychuk comes back.

  28. Gcole says:

Am i the only one who’s impressed with Marchand? Il admit I didn’t like him at all but this game and last against wsh he’s been pretty damn good

    • UEDkop says:

I like him so long as he stays on a line with Campbell and Thornton. I did not like at all how he was playing with Seguin and Ryder towards the end. He is not a skill player and should not be playing on that line. His merits are his speed and his determination, which is a perfect compliment to the grinding line.

      • #4 says:

He was the Leading goalscorer in Provvy. Infact mostly his whole life he’s been a skilled shooter/scorer. He just knew he had to play an agitator role in the NHL and did so. I like to see him rewarded with some offensive time. That move he pulled at the end was sick if he scored on that we’d be singing a diff tune.

      • Bruins says:

He’s one of those smaller guys whose offensive game most likely won’t translate to the pro game. I think he’ll end up as a very good agitator that can ghip in every once in a while but I believe his offensive upside is limited.

  29. willisss says:

tuukka…this poor guy can not catch a break. look at every goal that has been scored on him so far, other then the 2 break aways, NONE of them made sense. I know that nobody in this blog will turn on him, seeing as though most of you guys know the game. but i can all but
guarantee that there are new bandwagon fans out there that are ready to let him ride the pine all season.

    • #4 says:

There allready everywhere Willis. I read some comment on how Rask is the new Raycroft after he played 2 games. Because he let in a flipping puck….

Mark Stuart made a mistake can’t blame Tuuk. Oh and if BERGY COULD SHOOT! It woulda been 4-3 bruins.

      • UEDkop says:

I’m not ready to get on Bergy’s case. Once he stops making those magic-hat passes, maybe we could jump on his lack of goalscoring.

      • Bruins says:

Kind of impossible to get on Bergy’s case. Even when he’s not scoring he’s doing things that are invaluable to this team.

  30. Gcole says:

I’m not dissing tuukka but I think everyone overestimated him last year and just think he’s supposed to be a god all the time. He had a good year and we can’t expect him to be that awesome all the time. But I’m still pissed they benches Thomas after a game where it looked like a seasons highlight reel if games in ONE game

    • Bruins says:

If Tuukka doesn’t win the Vezina this year he’s out of the family.

So far this season his play is inconclusive. Freak bounces taht he can’t be blamed for, but at the same time he hasn’t done anything to establish himself as playing well where as Thomas has been playing out of his mind. That doesn’t have any bearing on Tuukka though. It’s kind of the same thing as last year. Because Tuukka played like a god people were shitting on Timmy when in reality he was still pretty decent.

  31. N.Horton18 says:

yeah its true thomas is the guy making tuukka look bad, if thomas has an off game they will go right back to tuukka the next game. and as for bergerons shooting issue, he is a playmaker by nature, and if WHEELER could fucking shoot worth shit, bergeron would have had 10 points by now, all assists, but still….
and an update on boychuk, out for roughly 4-weeks

    • Bruins says:

Shitty news. Even shittier that we have a bsy schedule the next 4 weeks starting thursday.

Hopefully they bring Bartkowski up but I’m betting they go with McQuaid.

    • #4 says:

The two of them together is like slamming your head against a concrete wall.(wheeler+bergeron) Both make great playmakers plays but niether can finish.

Especially depressing if you watch highlights of pre-concussion Bergeron, he had a nasty shot.

  32. WARD says:

if that was thomas in net people would want his head.

  33. Mook says:

ah well. boychuck can sit and relax. give someone else a go.

  34. ELWOPPO says:

    Krecji hurt now?

  35. Mook says:

krejci getting wisdom teeth removed. no big deal.

  36. Bruins says:

Bruins scouts, and Chiarelli himself, are apparently heavily scouting Phoenix. Obviously we need to clear some cap space and the Coyotes can take on some (if they can spend anymore).

Trying to narrow down who would be avaliable, what each team could use, and what money would make sense, I think the prime candidates are Ryder and Hunwick from Boston, and Aucoin, Lepisto and Schlemko from Phoenix.

    • UEDkop says:

You don’t think that Wheeler would do well in Phoenix? He’s got size AND speed. Phoenix also needs some more solid defending, which gives reason to the Hunwick talk but possibly also Ference. I dunno if we can let Ryder go right now.

That said: there won’t be a trade involving the B’s this early.

      • pearson says:

wheeler was originally drafted by phoenix and refused to sign with them. he then signed with the b’s the next year. im not saying that phoenix should have no interest in him, but it has to make things harder when you know the guy doesnt want to play there.

anything could happen, im just bringing up a curious point.

      • pearson says:

under any other circumstances i would call myself crazy for thinking about a trade this early, but with sturm and savard coming back in a month (knock on wood) its really time to stop enjoying the start and start evaluating how the money is going to work out.

  37. Bruins says:

I believe that Ryder/Wheeler/Paille/Hunwick will be made available to other teams. Not all need to be dealt but some combination does, and pretty much assuredly Ryder will be dealt, despite his strong play. Only other way is if Sturm waives his NTC and they find a good deal for him.

So what do we need coming back? Defense obviously. Everything else is set. Looking at their blueline you can rule out OEL and Yandle because they’re too good, Morris because getting him back would be bizarre, and Jovanoski because his cap hit is too high. That leaves Aucoin, Lepisto and Schlemko.

    So what does Phoenix want?

0% chance Phoenix goes for Wheeler. He already used an obscure loop hole to get out of there. To think they’d want him back (especially on a one year deal) is crazy.

So of the other guys that I brought up I don’t think the Coyotes would go for Paille as they have some good defensive forwards and grinders.

Phoenix’s strength is actually their blueline. They have a very solid and deep group. So they probably don’t need anyone unless they want to “upgrade” by getting Hunwick in a deal involving one of their 6/7 guys in Lepisto or Schlemko.

The main draw is probably Ryder for them. They’ve been struggling on offense. Only a one year deal so it won’t kill them. If Ryder is involved I think you might see a deal involving Aucoin as he only makes $2 million, and because Phoenix would likely want to send some salary back. We’d likely have to give up a pick/prospect for the salary dump though.

So if a trade goes down, I’d be shocked if someone was involved outside of Ryder, Hunwick, Aucoin, Lepisto, and Schlemko, not considering picks and prospects of course.

    • Bruins says:

The cap hits and years left under contract of these players are:

      Ryder: $4 million (1 yr)
      Hunwick: $1.45 million (1 yr)

Aucoin: $2 million (2 yrs) and a NTC
      Lepisto: 800k (1 yr)
      Schlemko: 550k (3 yrs)

  38. ryan says:

to help cap issue i say move ference to ahl and bring up bart or kampf

  39. #4 says:

    PC Looking at PHX:

Hunwick + Paille + Ryder for

Yandle(1.3)+ 4th round DP. Yandle is going to be a beast and he could solidify our Dline for years to come. Please let that happen.

  40. #4 says:

I can see how good he is thats why I think PC should try now instead of waiting till more people notice.

    PHX needs
    Speed (hunwick+paille)
    PK (Paille)
    Shooter (ryder)

    BOS needs
PMC/Solid 2 way Dman to stabilize Chara

Maybe if we threw in a first rounder? But yeah PHX would get fleeced in anytrade involving Yandle because hew ill beast in this league.

    • Bruins says:

They’re actually one of the better PK teams in the league. Not to mention Yandle is one of the best skaters in the league.

Believe me I’d love to see Yandle in a Bruins uniform, but unless we’re giving up a top young player that fits their needs like Krejci or Bergeron, it simply won’t happen.

  41. #4 says:

Murph just Twitted that Yandle is available.

  42. mook says:

you guys are nuts. bruins are dumping salary and that’s it. we’re not getting anything back…why? because everyone knows that instead of trading valuable assets for ryder, hunwick and wheeler…they just wait until the bruins put them on waivers (in december) and get them for free.

not every team is as stupid as the leafs.

    • Bruins says:

The teams looking at a guy like Ryder would most likely be high in the standings and wouldn’t get dibs on him on waivers. That’s why you might see a trade. Also explains why Chiarelli and co. were scouting the Phoenix roster.

But yeah it’s going to be a minor salary dump deal as in getting a depth player or late pick, none of this Yandle BS.

  43. JRy says:

I’m hearing Keith yandle and mikkel boedker or victor tikhonov for ryder wheeler and torontos first. Doubt it will happen.

  44. moast says:

Can this be legit or is it just blowing smoke?
I mean really? any chance of this being a three way with Toronto?

    Bos: Yandle
    Tor: Tor 1st, Wheeler
Pho: Hunwick, Ryder, whatever Tor throws in?

  45. Jefe77 says:

You cant trade the first pick back to Toronto, i dont think…

Anyways, how the hell are the Bruins going to attain consistency if they keep taking 5 day breaks?

I think this is the third time this season they have taken at least 5 days off between games….

  46. mook says:

    speaking of toronto…

we play them on thursday, ya know. thomas starting?

  47. JRy says:

Well I don’t no if this matters or not but Brian yandle spoke to his brother Keith and he doesn’t think a trades going to happen. Brian is a hockey instructor around here.

  48. moast says:

Beleive me, I know its Eklund, just thought i’d put it out there.

Hearing Marc Savard to Phoenix as a STRONG rumor (e4), also NHL and Officials come to a a four year deal

  49. Dbruins says:

Plus am I wrong or a player thats on LTIR cannot be traded???

  50. Richardo says:

Thank god theres hockey tonight!!! MAN am I sick of these long layoffs!!

    Lets go Bruins!!!

  51. Richardo says:

    Thomas tonight!!!

  52. Vince_M says:

Any chance McGrattan plays tonight? Would love to see him knock Orr’s head off if he pulls the same thing on Thomas. Actually Thomas would knock his head off! That being said Lucic, Thorton and McGrattan would keep them dirty Leafs in check.

    • Bruins says:

He’s not dressed. They have him scratched. Can’t say I’d mind him getting the nod tonight though. There’s definitely going to be some fights.

      • Gcole says:

such bullshit, then why did they sign him?! use him for these kinds of games. like last game against boogaard…

  53. #4 says:

Ohh Snap its E3. Savard to PhX

  54. Fluto Shinzawa says:

Has the season started yet? You’d barely know from checking this blog daily. Is Pekese on vacation again?

  55. oneandonly#4 says:

It bewilders me why McGrattan did not play against Boogaard on Sat or tonight against the Leafs. He should at least be there tonight to set the tone from the outset. McGrattan slapping around Orr, Lucic providing another smackdown of Komisarek and for good measure, Thornton laying down Dion. Kessel & Bozak & Co. would shit the bed & be rendered useless right from the start.

    • Bruins says:

I’d never dress McGratton and Thornton at the same time. That’s just overkill. Personally I’d go with McGratton for games against guys like Boogaard and Orr and then Thornton the rest of the time.

  56. Gcole says:

What was the crowd saying after Seguins goal?
