Hunwick traded to Colorado

Matt Hunwick had been traded to the Colorado Avalanche.  In return the Bruins will receive defenseman Colby Cohen.  Colby is a 6’2” 200 pound right handed shooting defenseman.  A former second round pick out of Boston University, Cohen is expected to join Providence when he arrives to the Bruins organization.

With this trade, expect Adam McQuaid to be in the lineup as the 6th defenseman.  Another potential move could be calling up Matt Kampfer or Matt Bartkowski, who were both impressive in training camp.  With Marc Savard’s return on the horizon, shedding Hunwick’s 1.45 million salary may be the first of many moves in attempts to get Savard and Sturm back on the team and under the cap.

  1. moast says:

Love the trade! One of the weakest links gone and a promising Dman + enough cap space to get Savvy back.
Nice move Chia….this also gets me thinking that there may be a larger move down the road to get a guy like Yandle as Hunwick was the closest to a PMD that they had.
To all of the Hunwick lovers out there, McQuaid will fill his spot and then some.
Nice fight Hunwick but it wasn’t meant to be.

  2. Whopperfoo says:

Hunwick knew he was potentially on the block? Hence the fight the other night in a last ditch effort to stay in boston?

  3. bruins4eva says:

well i don’t think hunwick was all the problem…but it had to be done…and when sturm returns…pls send michael ryders ass packing…ive hated him since he came here

  4. Neely8 says:

I think paille is next! All i know is savard is close to returning!

    • bruins4eva says:

they need to move more then paille’s money…

      • Neely8 says:

        Wheeler,Paille and ……………?

      • moast says:

Paille, Ryder to the minors or to the Islanders for picks?

      • Brendan says:

        thursday for savvy baby

      • #4 says:

I agree moast those who want to move wheeler are just flat out wrong about the kid.

One of the few bruins with fire this year and has played every position a forward can well. He’s also a victim of linemates like ryder who dont show up 75% of the time.

Note he is the only bruin to score when they are down 3-0. Dont tell me the kid has no effort. He will be a good player on the B’s for a while.

  5. willisss says:

Fuck this deal, I always liked hunwick

  6. moast says:

    Read this:

Sounds like Chiarelli robbed another team (coming from someone who knows the Avs.
I did like Hunwick to an extent but from reading this and other background on Cohen, sounds like hes solid with a hell of a shot.

  7. Bruins says:

Noice! To be fair to Hunwick though he was playing much better this year.

I actually really like Cohen though. Great offensive d-man with size. He could definitely contribute in time on our thin blueline.

  8. Bruins says:

Oh and call Kampfer up. What more can he do to impress than what he’s doing down in Providence right now?

  9. Gcole says:

    Lucic savard Horton
    Sturm krejci seguin
    Wheeler bergeron Ryder
    Thornton Campbell Marchand

And I haven idea if it fits capeise but it sounds good to me

  10. Richardo says:

The Bruins are now cap compliant for Savard to come back… Sweet!!! It’ll be interesting to see who goes for Sturm.

  11. Mike says:

This is a nice move…Hunwick is not good defensively, and his offense did show great numbers either…he gets pushed around a ton and McQuaid will be more of an asset for that part of the game alone!…

  12. #4 says:

Good move from what I gather this kid is Big, a good skater and has a bomb of a shot. 3 things that usually can transfer into him becoming a good NHL dman.

I liked Hunwick but he was a hit or miss DMAN either a good play or it completely blew up on him. But he was probably the best skater on D and the B’s are notoriously lacking good skating DMAN.

    • CCMGoalie says:

After seeing Cohen play at BU when he would play UVM at the Gut (If you don’t what that is or where UVM is you don’t know jack about College Hockey History or current Bruins Goaltending) and this kid is going to be GOOD. He’s got an absolute monsterly heavy shot

      • CCMGoalie says:

Hunwick had a decent run when he first came up, but he’s still too easily knocked off the puck and all too frequently coughs it up in the neutral zone or in the defensive zone. Both are horrible things to hear about defensemen. I think MCquaid will step in and do a great job and at least be able to hold his own against guys in the corners. Batrkowski will probably get the call up for the 7th man or they’ll just pull him up as needed. I have confidence in our 6th and 7th D-men now. I couldn’t say that 48 hours ago. So I think Peter made out like a bandit and pulled some black magic hexes out of his Harvard bag to make the GM for the Av’s go for this. But again, I’m happy it worked out for us.

      • #4 says:

Essentially it was a known commodity 7th rounder (Hunwick) for a developing 2nd Round Prospect (Cohen).

Av’s also traded another D for Flieschman of the Caps. So Hunwick was to replace that defenseman makes more sense now.

  13. jmed says:

Wish it was ference that went but either way I think it will improve the Dee, they will be much more physical with McQuaid in the lineup.

  14. moast says:

What do you think of a Ryder-Krejci-Seguin line.
    Fast and tonnes of potential?

    • Gcole says:

depends on if its the ryder that played last year or the ryder we see occasionally this year.

      • moast says:

I’m hoping with Krejcis vision and Seguins speed, it could have the potential to be a fast and potent line. I think this could be what Ryder and the Bruins need, assuming (hopefully) they demote Sturm. I feel bad saying that….maybe he has gas left and will come back strong and Ryder should go, who knows….It’s not saying much, but he will be gone next year, he is cheaper than Ryder and was the leading scorer last year.

  15. Neely8 says:

I think the Bruins will be alright once savard gets back to his old self! With him in the Lineup the B’s will have soo much flexibility! I dont even care about sturm, As long as Saavy comes back healthy! Mind you a healthy sturm is great as he can score goals in bunches when he’s hot!!

  16. #4 says:

The bruins biggest problem is Big Slow solid Dmen who are good at playing physical but lack Puck Moving abilities. Hunwick was the closest thing they had to a a true PMD.

I have always had a feeling that a true PMD would augment chara and turn him into a force on the ice(if you played them together). This must be the first in a line of moves for the team. I believe Kaberle and Yandle are likely targets but I am unsure of the other potential PMD around the league that could be moved.

Ryder and Paille also need to go. Love paille but my friends who only play pondhockey once a year have better hands and Ryder is bad for the team. He is Juliens Pet and a non factor 85% of the time. His unfocused and undetermined play brings down whatever line he is on and he can deflate the team in a way that I thought only wideman was capable of.

Team needs a bit of a gutjob 2new defenseman 1 new forward like an Upshall type. Not expensive or great but good and tons of effort/heart.

  17. moast says:

    Upshall, Yandle (3.4mil)
    Wheeler, Ryder, B’s 1st, B’s 2nd (8.4 mil)
It would probably take To’s 1st in replace of B’s 2nd.
No way in hell Phoenix does it but one can dream!

    Horton Savard Lucic
    Upshall Krejci Seguin
    Sturm Bergeron Recchi
    Marchand Campbell Thornton

    Chara Yandle
    Boychuk Seidenberg
    Ference Stuart

  18. Whopperfoo says:

If we package, wheeler/someone, picks, prospects together, is byfuglien out of the question? I know hotlanta is trying to rebuild and there’s a decent shot buff doesn’t want to stay there for that?

    • moast says:

Its a good point….I would love to see Buff on this team…..he would be an amazing Bruin. Not sure what would lure him out of there… he a RFA or UFA at years end?
Would they have to trade for him?
If they have to trade I would throw whatever picks and prospects at them.

      What a tough looking 6:
      Chara Byflugien
      Boychuk Seidenberg
      Stuart McQuaid

      • #4 says:

Buff is due for a huge payday and unless you think Buff = Cup then he is way to expensive to rent. The B’s have no chance at signing him next year the way this season is going for him.

  19. Haus says:

#4, I agree the biggest priority for this team should be a PMD, and im sure it is. I disagree with a ‘gutjob’ though. No need for another forward or radical changes outside of the PMD and whats necessary for cap purposes. Hopefully the other cap deals happen very soon so the locker room can re-stabilise itself.

    • #4 says:

Cant get a PMD without offering up somethng though Haus a forward or 2 needs to go. By gutjub I meant maybe a total of 3 players moved.

  20. Haus says:

Byfuglien is out of the question.

  21. moast says:

Who is possibly available as a PMD that the B’s could try and grab?

Regehr? Dont think hes a PM

    • Bruins says:

Regehr is the complete opposite of a PMD. Yandle isn’t available and Kaberle never seems to get done.

Possibly Pitkanen. That’s the only guy I can really see moving.

  22. Bruins says:

3 options once Sturm comes back, move Ryder, or Sturm (NTC), or Wheeler an Paille.

    If they move Ryder:

(Caron in the minors as the first call-up, might as well have him play somewhere)

    If they move Sturm:

(Caron in the same situation as above)

If they move Wheeler and Paille:

    (Caron same as above)

I’d move Wheeler and Paille. Paille becomes useless no matter what the situation, so you might as well move him. And Wheeler could get you the best return out of all the players listed.

I’d like to see Caron in the line-up but I’m not sure where he’d go. I don’t care about Paille being in hte pressbox but Caron is young and needs to play.

  23. N.Horton18 says:

i like this move alot, although cohen is a gamble. with hunwick at least you know what you get.

  24. Pen says:

Seguin may be loaned for to the Canadian Junior team to clear up cap space for 3-4 weeks to make room for Sturm…might be a good idea to showcase Sturm for a trade. I’m sure Sequin wouldn’t mind the hiatis to accomplish something he hasn’t had the chance to do before and win at the World Jrs…as a side point…..maybe he could scout out some of the talent that he could be playing with when the Bruins select high off Toronto’s pick next year! win win win situation

    • TheBellEnd says:

there is an absolute ZERO chance this happens…where the fuck do you guys get this shit…why ON EARTH would they “loan” one of their soon to be premier players who is ALREADY IN OUR LINEUP to a national tournament where his chances of injury increase ten-fold due to younger need-to-prove-myself juniors playng their hearts out like it’s their last game on earth.

This kid cracked our roster and that’s where he is staying…no questions asked…the cap space cleared by his “temporary leave” is pro-rated at 850,000 for the year. bonuses do not count for cap-relief…so lets figure that out, shall we??

simple math dictates that based on an 82 game schedule lasting 28 weeks, Seguins salary is roughly $30,357 a week.

with your amazing idea, the Bruins would “shed” approx. 90,000 to 120,000 for the duration of the junior tournament.

that should buy us about 4 bags of pucks and a few pairs of skates…thanks for comin out….

      • MattG says:

I disagree, outside of the injury concern, it can only help his development. He’s not doing much with us right now, playing only abot 13 mins a night, give him a chance to shine in an international tourny, could be a huge confidence boost.

      • Pen says:

so much anger over a rumor I heard on Sportsnet last night watch the Toronto cave in against Tampa! …and apparently a rumor with some teeth as it was subsequently reported on ESPN as a possibility…

To clear enough cap space they suggest demoting Caron, trading Paille and loaning Seguin ..gets the B’s to within a few hundred thousand of the cap space required for Sturm.

      • TheBellEnd says:

Not anger…just frustration…and after some digging, I also found these rumours…but I’m telling you…this doesn’t happen…and IF IT DOES…it is simply because Seguin has REQUESTED it, NOT to clear a miniscule amount of cap space.

BTW anyone else notice that Ryder is responsible for a majority of Seguins goals…some crazy passes!!!…They look good together out there….never thought I’d say that about Ryder…lol

  25. seguin>hall says:

Guys… This trade is great. The term “puck moving defenseman” is the most overrated, overused term in hockey. Was ray bourque a pmd? How ’bout bobby? Did anyone know wtf a pmd was in those eras? Is the puck moving when it comes off chara”s stick at over 105mph? In every sport, tough defense wins championships…. Not puck moving defensemen. Our defense just became stronger. Nice job chia.. AGAIN!

    • Bruins says:

      Was Orr a pmd? Really?

Pmd are definitely important for the transition game but it doesn’t have to be a Duncan Keith type defenseman that does it with his feet. Having defensemen that make a great first pass out of the zone are just as valuable. With the addition of Seidenberg last year I feel alot better about this team’s transition game than before we had him. And on the PP we have guys like Krejci and Seguin that can loop back to carry it up the ice so it’s not that big of a deal.

We still aren’t a very good team with our transition game but it’s not like it’s awful.

  26. Haus says:

PMD is definately not an overrated term, especially with the elimination of the two-line pass and less hooking and holding going on. By my count Chicago had 4 of them last year. Pitt and Det had their share too in their cup years. And yes, Bourque could be characterized as a PMD. Watch the archives and see the transition passing he was capable of. Of course, Bourque could do everything though.

  27. Haus says:

I see what you’re saying now, #4. By gutjob, I was thinking you meant making the team over.

  28. moast says:

Anyone want to see McGratton tonight?
We are playing the Flyers…..wouldn’t hurt.

  29. #4 says:

Meh McGratts adds nothing towards gaining a W and the B’s really need a W. I would shake up the lines tonight to try and get something going.

I doubt it would happen but its a combo with a ton of scoring-speed-grit on the first 2lines.

    • #4 says:

My thinking is that Krejci and Seguins passes will due better to set up horton one timers. While lucic opens up space for Bergeron so he spends less time in the Corners. Marchand has played well so he gets a chance on the top2.

Caron-Wheeler should cover up for ryder’s show-ornoshow attitude and lack of defensive positioning.. They also forecheck well and should create onetimers for ryder.

Paille-Campbell-Thornton shouldnt see the ice much except for a staged Thorny fight and Campbell on pk/defensive zone faceoffs.

    • moast says:

I’d love to see Seguin on the first line.
i still think that McGratts with Thornton would help. Philly is very tough and to have McGratts fight Shelly and then Thornton can fight whoever….it just frees up Chara and Lucic to do more important shit. They need to play tough and physical to be the team at the start of the season.

      • moast says:

And Marchand definatley deserves some time on one of the top two……although I hate to see the 4th out of whack.

      • Bruins says:

Seguin on the first line? CJ will have none of that, he might actually do well! Nope, 12 minutes a night is what Seguin will get.

      • #4 says:

lol bruins. I know one of my many problems with dumbface julien. I dont actually hate Julien but I absolutely hate his dumb face he makes after every goal/penalty against omg that pisses me off.

      • #4 says:

TBH, I forgot recchi my mistake insert Recchi over Paille. Dont skate Recchi too much save him for offensive zone faceoffs and PP time. He is best when he is fresh while others are tired.

    • Haus says:

      I like this lineup.

  30. N.Horton18 says:

i love the bruins but this is bullshit, this team is painful to watch right now. they need a shake up trade like:

    Bos players:
    Mark Stuart
    Min 2nd rd pick

    Stl players:
    Mike Weaver
    Dave Scatchard

  31. moast says:

Solid first period……two more to go. Nice to see Bergeron and Seguin score…..Timmy is palying well and lots pf energy from everyone…..Love the line ups!

  32. Gcole says:

Tim Thomas is the fucking man tonight

  33. Gcole says:

Anyone else noticing and LOVING chara getting in there offensively? Guys a TANK!! he should do this more often

    • moast says:

I know Chara is a beast and is a work horse but I think that if he had a perfect #2 pairing, he wouldn’t have to work as hard and be able to play this way most nights.

  34. seguin>hall says:

Did u guys notice that every one of our defensemen moved the puck at some point tonight. 6 pmd.. What more could we ask for?!? Great trade chia. Pmd= stupid, overrated term. No one makes the nhl if they can’t make an outlet pass.

  35. lucic crew says:

wow everybody except gcole dont praise thomas at once . yet again if it wasn’t for thomas we lose . good first period and then thomas the savior atta boy timmie u the fucking man

  36. Jefe77 says:

Timmy! Now lets get Tuukka a big home win tomorrow.

  37. Bruins says:

Timmy is very angry at all of the doubters from last year (or his entire career for that matter).

And for God’s sake Bruins, show up for at least one game for Tuukka this year please.

  38. Bruins says:

I’m going to Canada vs. Sweden WJC over the Christmas holidays so it’s possible I’ll get to see the top 5 prospects in the draft (and one future Bruin) play: definitely Larsson, Landeskog and Couturier, and maybe Nugent-Hopkins and Murphy.

  39. ELWOPPO says:

I hope Toronto loses 2nite, Edmonton had a great come back win last night maybe they win again tonight?

  40. ELWOPPO says:

    What happened to BigBadBruins? LOL
    Did he retire “G” LOL

On a side note I heard that Seguin will play with savard tonight or Sat! They like the fact that he has speed and a shot like kessel did playing on the right side with Saavy! What do you guys think of that pairing?

  41. Haus says:

Couple of notes from last night: Timmy was incredible, sometimes he looks out of whack but he always gets the job done…. Boychuk had his best game of the year in my opinion…. Anybody else notice Mcquaid didnt play at all in the 3rd? Looks like they arent quite ready to trust him in the tight ones…. I thought Campbell was steady and consistent throughout last night, Krejci very good in the faceoff circle…. Kudos to the coaches for recognizing the flaws in Phillys PK coverage (having the forwards pressure high on the wings when opponents are moving the puck up). Having someone swing underneath thru the middle for the entry pass opened up the zone….. Refs were ridiculously one way with the calls, how many holding non-calls did you count?…

  42. zamer says:

great win,but they still need to manage the puck better in there own zone.not depend on your goalie all the time.

  43. jeff13 says:

    Sturm to the kings!!!!

  44. willisss says:

Sturm traded to the kings? No details, no source, just grapevine

  45. Vince_M says:

It is on Ek’s site that Sturm got traded to LA. Don’t say for who or any details.

  46. mypetdwarf says:

    Sturm traded to the Kings

  47. #4 says:

    Sturm to LA

Good Bye Marco. I hope you enjoy LA. You were one of my favorite bruins for the last few years and I know I may have bashed you here and there but anyone who misses 100X breakaways in a row deserves it.(at least a bit)

Heres to your good health and to hoping your knees hold up I wish you well in LA.

Ill never forget these bruins porn moments made possible by Sturm…

  48. Mathew Allen says:

    Sturm to L.A. for…. ?

    Drew Doughty – lol…

  49. moast says:

Since we are speculating, what if:

    Sturm and picks/prospects to LA
    For Jack Johnson
    – Trade Paille and still cap friendly!

    More likely
    Sturm and picks/prospects to LA
    For Thomas Hickey

Either way, I am super pumped on this.
Loved Sturm but he was on his way out, streaky, super injury prone, wrong side of 30 etc.

Now we can keep Wheeler too……nice.

  50. Birdman2403 says:

Sturm was a good player for the B’s ! Stay healthy and good luck !

  51. Haus says:

Conditional draft pick, its dependent on his health and contribution.

  52. moast says:

Shitty if it is a conditional draft pick.
Why not package some picks/prospects and get one of there awesome d prospects.

  53. Haus says:

The pick as of right now is a 5th, but it can be higher based on his contribution.

    • #4 says:

Where do yo u see that no1 is reporting what LA sent back. But 3rd-4th sounds more right but w/e it was just a salary dump.

  54. Haus says:

murphys law twitter. hes a reporter with the bs

  55. #4 says:

Wondering if this happend right after Ryder’s assist to Seguin last night lol. But I hope they still get rid of Paille to free up another 1m for a top4 dman.

  56. Haus says:

What do people think about if New Jersey keeps falling making a deal for Andy Greene? He will be a UFA, is cap-friendly THIS year and a PMD? Im guessing it would cost a Max Suave or Hamill, a prospect on the cusp of the NHL. Tear apart this proposal as you like….
